Designer of bridges and remarkable buildings since 1964 from offices in Saragossa (1964-67), Madrid (1967-78) and Santander. In 1988 he founded the engineering design firm APIA XXI, settled in Santander. In November of 1999 he established the engineering design firm “ARENAS & ASOCIADOS, INGENIERÍA DE DISEÑO” with five engineers of his team, giving continuity between both stages of his professional life. MOST REMARKABLE PROJECTS IN THE LAS 10 YEARS: - Renovation of “María Cristina” Bridge in San Sebastian.
- Viaducts in the Ring Road of Granada.
- “La Barqueta” bridge in Seville for the Expo’92.
- Seville West Outer Ring SE-30.
- “La Arena” cable stayed viaduct in the Cantabrian Highway (Biscay).
- “Potosí” cable stayed bridge over Besós River in Barcelona.
- Cable stayed bridge over Science and Technology Park in Paterna (Valencia).
- Oblatas Bowstring Bridge in Pamplona.
- Four levelled junction of M-40 Madrid Bypass with Burgos and Colmenar Roads.
- Viaducts of Almery Bypass.
- Viaduct over Betanzos Estuary, La Coruña, for the Spanish Atlantic Highway.
- Southern Inner Ring Road, First Phase. Urban Ring Road with cable stayed bridge over Pisuerga River in Valladolid.
- The Regenta Viaduct, concrete arch with a span of 190 meters, constructed by cantilever method using launching girder and temporary ties.
- Bowstring in “Las Llamas”, Santander.

Eight books and several monographies about projecting and calculating in structures, the most remarkable are the next: - “El Puente, pieza esencial del mundo humanizado” (“Bridges, essential pieces of a humanized world”). Brief synthesis of the development of the humankind in the field of construction. Iinaugural lecture of the University of Cantabria in 1982. It was published by the University and now out of print.
- “Caminos en el aire: Los Puentes” (“Roads on the air: The Bridges”). Two volumes book edited by the “Colegio de Ingenieros de Caminos, Canales y Puertos”, in May of 2003. General essay about technical and cultural values of bridges in different historic stages.
- “Puentes de Cantabria” (“Cantabria Bridges”), 1999.
- More than a hundred of technical articles since 1970 published by Spanish engineering and architectural reviews. About 15 technical articles in English reviews (Bridge), Swiss (IABSE Journal), German (Baukultur), Italian (L’Industria Italiana del Cemento) and North American (PCI Journal).

Or “Conceptual design of structures” exposed to the IASS symposium that took place in Stuttgart in 1997. Or “Urban Bridges” presented in the FIB symposium of Prague in October of 1999.
