The new mobile bridge in the city of Barranquilla (Colombia), represents a milestone within the ambitious project of the Gran Malecón, which also includes the construction of a new city hall and urban developments. The structure is located at the junction on the North arm of the Magdalena River that forms the island of La Loma.
A “Dutch-type” bascule bridge is designed with a 35.00 m mobile span and two 18.45 m side spans for a total length of 73.90 m. The bridge has a 27.50 x 33.00 m horizontal frame that houses the counterweight. Two vertical supports hold this element 12.50 m above the deck. The frame includes in its rear part a counterweight of approximately 700 tons, which largely compensates the weight of the mobile leaf that is suspended by a pair of tie rods. The vertical supports are accessible, since they house the opening mechanisms inside their lower pillar and allow access for their inspection and maintenance.
The manufacture of the metallic structure of the mobile bridge was carried out in Spain. The deck, towers and counterweight frame were transported by boat across the Atlantic to Barranquilla (Colombia), where it was finally assembled at the final location.
